Copywriter vs Content Creator

The one thing I get asked a lot is, “what’s the difference between copywriting and content creating?”

Before I get into the nitty gritty of the above, there’s one major thing I just need to clarify about copywriting...

It's NOT copyRIGHTing, as in the thing where you stick a little '©' next to stuff!

It’s also NOT ‘copying’, as in copying someone else’s work! Believe it or not, these are some of the misconceptions I’ve had to clarify.

That’s ok though, as unless you’re in the creative industry, or own a business, or have a rough knowledge of the writing process, you wouldn’t have necessarily been introduced to copywriting or content creation.

Essentially, both concepts embrace the idea of writing successful content (or copy). However, there are some key differences that distinguish between the two.

Copywriters tend to be more sales focused, and are often used for creating adverts, sequenced emails, website and social media.

They establish a ‘call to action’ and use emotive language to capture their audience, so there is a response to the CTA.

A content creator has the same traits mentioned as a copywriter, however there are some significant differences.

Content creation uses storytelling to bring life to descriptions, and incorporates greater detail and depth.

By using colourful and expressive language, the reader is engaged as well as informed and educated on the topic of note.
